Should You Save or Splurge on These Nursery Items?

It’s no secret that having a baby is expensive. There are some items that it’s a great idea to splurge on, to really make your baby feel comfortable. There are some other items where can definitely find ways to stretch the budget. A good general rule is that if it’s going to save you time or come in contact with your baby, you might want to splurge!
Baby Blankets: Splurge!

Baby blankets pull quite a few duties around the nursery. From swaddle to tummy time mat, makeshift changing pad to an emergency burp cloth, don’t skimp on baby blankets. The best blankets are made of soft materials like cotton muslin, can withstand the washer, and have stylish designs to complement your nursery.

Changing Table: Save

The simple changing table is often practical. A few cubbies, possibly some drawers. While you will be spending more time than you will care to count with your baby here, there’s no need to spend extravagantly on changing tables. After all, you’ll also be changing your baby all over the place, wherever you go. Make sure there is a changing pad and walls to keep the pad contained, but the rest of the details are up to you.

Burp Cloths: Splurge!

One of the main reasons to splurge on burp cloths is the staggering number of them you’ll go through in a couple of days. The more burp cloths you have, the longer you can go without needing to do laundry. You can also splurge on burp cloths with fun designs or bibs that convert into burp cloths for versatility.

Rocking Chair: Save

Feeding your baby often takes place in a rocking chair, and you might want to splurge only because of this. However, it’s worth your time to see if you can get a used rocking chair in good condition, if you’re looking to save money. If you are going to spend money, spend it on the cushions.

Crib: Splurge!

Your baby will spend a lot of time sleeping in the crib after moving out of a bassinet and before moving to a toddler bed, so it’s worth your money to splurge. It should be a crib that looks good in the nursery while adjusting to your baby as they grow. It’s important to buy a crib new because safety regulations change, and you want to make sure it’s up to date.

Décor: Save

Baby décor adds up quickly. Instead of splurging on wall decals, paint a scene on the wall or build a row of hanging wooden initials that you can decorate with faux flowers or sports team pennants.

Diaper Pail: Splurge!

Invest in a diaper pail that keeps odors in. You will need bags, but the pail itself is a one-time investment. Every so often, you should clean the pail with bleach. With a decent pail, you can enjoy a nursery that does not smell like diapers every time you walk in. While not a necessity, it will save you from running to the trash can in the middle of the night. Keep in mind that some models take regular trash bags, while others require specialized refills, increasing the cost in the long run. This is a day one purchase and will be useful from the day you come home from the hospital through toddlerhood.
